As Clover is a OpenSource project, everyone who wants
to compile may compile...

To make the things a lot easier, STLVNUB made a script
that makes all the hard work for you, this way you can
have Clover always at the latest revision without the need
to wait till someone publish a new package and also, make
your own changes to the code if needed...

You will need to have Xcode and Command Line Tools in order
to use the script...

Additional tools to compile Clover will be automatically
installed by the script.

Download and run the installer...

Posted Image

Press continue and when you reach the customisation section, change the install location if needed then press "Customize"…

Posted Image

Read carefully the instructions given for each option after you select a entry at the bottom of the window, if you don't understand exactly which option you should choose, you can use the options selected at the image below…

Posted Image

Click "Install", write your password, wait till the installation finishes and reboot...

Posted Image

If you installed Clover using "boot1f32alt", you own the ability to have and use more than one bootloader on the same disk...

boot1f32alt gives to you 2 seconds to press the number of your desired boot file and choose the Bootloader that you want to use...

For example, assuming that you installed 64bit Clover as default option, you can use the 32bit one by pressing "3", or if you rename Chameleon's "boot" file to "boot1", if you press "1" you can use Chameleon as Bootloader...

There's also the possibility to have XPC and Revoboot, for detailed instructions take look here > One Fat32 Usb Stick With Many Hackintosh Bootloaders/managers - Project OS X Forums Thanks to dmazar for this awesome tip!

Clover main goal is EFI booting...

If you plan to use Clover, keep in mind that Legacy boot (non EFI boot) may work or not, so,
maybe you can't boot your current Windows or Linux Installations through Clover...

In this case, you can use the "tip" at Installation section and have the ability to use Chameleon
to boot your "Legacy" OS and have all Clover's benefits to boot OS X...

This does not mean that in the future this will not be completely fixed...

********************************************************************************

For those having issues with Legacy Boot (non UEFI boot) using the default option...

<key>LegacyBoot</key>
<string>PBR</string>

You can try using the option below...

<key>LegacyBoot</key>
<string>LegacyBiosDefault</string>

Boot process will go as the follow:

BIOS boot: BIOS>MBR>PBR>BOOT>CLOVERX64.EFI>OS

UEFI BIOS: UEFI>CLOVERX64.EFI>OS

From GUI you have the ability to make changes to the Defaults Settings and try your own
settings before use as Clover Defaults...

Main Options

Posted Image

DSDT Fix Mask

Posted Image

CPU Tuning

Posted Image

Graphics Injection

Posted Image

Binaries Patching

Posted Image

To use Special Startup Options like, Skip Caches ("WithKexts" option, -f doesn't exist in Clover), Verbose Mode, Single User Mode, 32bit, etc..., press "space" key when your desired boot device is selected...

You make your tests and want to set your changes as defaults, just add the needed information to the "config.plist" located at "/EFI/CLOVER" or "/EFI/CLOVER/OEM/System Product Name" folder like the example below (viewed from Xcode)...

Clover can patch your DSDT on-the-fly...

With this function, now everyone can have a patched DSDT without the risk of use someone's DSDT
or the need to ask someone to made one for you...

Just select needed patches, apply and enjoy...

Posted Image

There's also a tool made by cVad to calculate the DSDT Fix Mask > BootDiskUtility.exe / Home / cVad MAC

Posted Image

Or if you wish, you can use your own patched DSDT...

<key>ACPI</key>
<dict>
<key>DsdtName</key>

Clover automatically detect your Hardware and choose the
best SMBIOS for your system and this should be enough...

But if you want, you may set your desired SMBIOS...

<key>SMBIOS</key>
<dict>
<key>ProductName</key>
<string>iMac12,2</string>
</dict>

Or you can set only a specific entry...

<key>SMBIOS</key>
<dict>
<key>SerialNumber</key>
<string>XXXXXXXXXXX</string>
</dict>

In both cases above, Clover will automatically fill the no specified entries...

You can also customize all information you want...

[UPDATE] Rev 1351 : Kext injection has changed again. Check @ Project OS X - Kext Injection

[UPDATE] Rev 1277 - 1350 : Clover directory has been changed as users may notice when using r1284+ installer (officially uploaded at Sourceforge). In addition, WithKexts has been splitted to 2 options; NoKexts and NoCaches. So, you got 3 options when you press space bar;

  • Boot Mac OS X without caches
  • Boot Mac OS X without extra kexts
  • Boot Mac OS X without caches or extra kexts

New directory: \EFI\CLOVER

NoKexts: Any kext in \EFI\CLOVER\kexts\10.x will not be injected.
NoCaches: Skip/ignore kernelcache

When kext injection is working, then any caches should be ignored (kernelcache, Extensions.mkext) and boot.efi should load kernel and kexts separatelly - slower boot with lot of dots on a screen. Also, if any kexts are loaded, then they should be visible in system as they would normally be. For example, FakeSMC would write some line in kernel log and can be seen with;
kextstat | grep -i fake
Plus, boot.log will have something like;
FSInjection: OS=xx.x Injecting kexts from: 'xxxxx' done!

If above is not happening, then this kext injection is not working.

A short info how this kext loading is working. Maybe it will help you to see what went wrong:

  • FSInject.efi is loaded on startup from \EFI\drivers \EFI\CLOVER\drivers - this is file system proxy driver that is just loaded initially. will get activated later if needed.
  • Volume selection screen is shown - you can mark the volume and press space to get boot options and then choose "Boot Mac OS X without caches" (going into details to avoid confusion).
  • This searches for appropriate folder where kexts could be located;
    • -> EFI\OEM\xxx\kexts\xx.y \EFI\CLOVER\OEM\xxx\kexts\xx.y(version speciffic) or
    • -> EFI\OEM\xxx\kexts\Other \EFI\CLOVER\OEM\xxx\kexts\Other or
    • -> EFI\kexts\xx.y \EFI\CLOVER\kexts\xx.y or
    • -> EFI\kexts\Other \EFI\CLOVER\kexts\Other
  • First one found is used, no metter if it is empty or not (possible mistake: if you are booting 10.8 and have kexts\10.8 which is empty and kexts\Other with FakeSMC, then kexts\10.8 will be used and no kexts will be added).
  • If one is found, then FSInject.efi is activated - this replaces existing file system driver with our proxy implementation. this one is able to block OSX caches and inject drivers to /S/L/E.
  • boot.efi is started - it can not load caches (blocked by FSInject), so it loads kernel and kexts from /S/L/E (FSInject will take care to report our extra kexts as being in /S/L/E).
  • Lot of dots should appear on screen during kext loading.

So, this is what is required:

  • FSInject.efi in \EFI\drivers \EFI\CLOVER\drivers.
  • Kexts in appropriate folder.
  • Boot with "Boot Mac OS X without caches" or just write manually boot-args=NoCaches.

The widely known Chameleon's "GraphicsEnabler" is called "GraphicsInjector" in Clover…

As Clover does with SMBIOS injection, your device is automatically detected and recognised
by the bootloader…

The only thing that you must do is enable "GraphicsInjector" at Clover's Menu Options
and/or add the following entry to your config.plist file…

<key>Graphics</key>
<dict>
<key>GraphicsInjector</key>
<string>Yes</string>
</dict>

If you need more detailed instructions for your Video Card, this information can be found an ErmaC's topic at InsanelyMac… Thanks ErmaC!!!

There you will find the most detailed information about ATI Cards and EDID Injection…

What Clover does???

With few words, for those that have the "old" regular BIOS, he replaces him with his own
(U)EFI BIOS making every OS running from within Clover "believe" that he is running under
UEFI Firmware…

And for those that already have a UEFI Firmware, he helps the Firmware "see" OS X by giving
needed resources to boot OS X that is impossible for a regular PC Firmware…

This plus lots and lots of improvements, for example, you can have a patched DSDT to be used
with OS X and another "clean" and "unmodified" to be used for Windows if booted using Clover's
Firmware like I did before I flash my UEFI BIOS….

You will have a Hack more kind a Mac, for example, you are using OS X and needs switch to
Windows but don't want to edit any configuration file or even select the Windows entry at Clover's
GUI (or have Silent Boot enabled)??? Simple, just go to "System Preferences > Startup Disk", select
the Windows Disk and press reboot, Clover will boot straight to Windows… Impossible for any other
bootloader…

Well, I believe that for now it's enough…

I hope that Slice, dmazar, blackosx, STLVNUB, pene, apianti and all developers involved with Clover
Project may gift us with his visit from time to time to make this thread increasingly better...

Here I'll try to list the most common user doubts...

Before anything, check the items below... (Thanks Elclaudio to sort this out!)

> Do not put anything more in /efi/acpi/patched except your DSDT

> You have patched DSDT ? : you just need to put it to /efi/acpi/patched (assuming you have nothing in /efi/oem folder) and set in Clover ACPI/FixDsdtMask=0

> GFX patches in DSDT ? : you do not need GraphicsEnabler in Chameleon : no need for it in Clover also: set Graphics/GraphicsInjector=No

> Audio patches already in DSDT ? : set in Clover PCI/HDAInjection=No

> When you put CsmVideoDxe-64.efi to drivers64UEFI, this driver replaces your original graphics driver and offers more resolutions from your card, but at the cost of additional boot time

> Clover is not selecting highest resolution when CsmVideoDxe-64.efi is loaded because that driver can reveal some resolutions which are not usable on current monitor

> PatchVBios in config.plist : Some nVidia users are having success with this, and some not. nVidia patching is not reliable. But you can try.

>> What FSInject-XX.efi does?

It's a driver responsible for Kext Injection, so, It's installed as Default for UEFI and Regular BIOS users.

>> What OsxFatBinaryDrv-XX.efi does?

It's a driver responsible for add support for FAT Binary data, Mandatory to UEFI users.

>> What HFSPlusXXX.efi does?

It's a driver responsible for add support to HFS Filesystem, Mandatory to UEFI users.

>> What VBoxExt2-XX.efi does?

It's a driver responsible for add support to EXT Filesystem, optional for Linux users.

>> Why Clover takes longer than Chameleon to reach the Bootloader's GUI?

Keep in mind that Clover need some time to Inject his EFI Layer when powering the machine...
Chameleon doesn't do this so, you can reach Chameleon's GUI more faster...

BTW, reaching the bootloader's GUI faster does't mean that your OS X boot is/will be faster...

On Real UEFI System this delay doesn't exists as Clover doesn't need to inject his own...

>> How I boot Ignoring Caches ( -f ) ?

The Chameleon's Boot Flag -f to boot OS X Ignoring System Caches doesn't exist in Clover...
On his place we have the WithKexts option that haves the same functionality of Chameleon's -f...

To use this option, at Clover's GUI press Space Bar on your desired boot entry to have access to
various Boot Options including WithKexts...

If by some reason you want this option as Default, just ad as boot-arg on your config.plist file...

<key>boot-args</key>
<string>npci=0x2000 darkwake=0 WithKexts -v</string>

>> Why OS X boot always freeze without use WhitKexts option?

There's a known bug that may prevent some machine to boot using Kernelcache...

After long research, bcc9 was able to find a fix for this issue > Waiting for root device when kernel cache used; only with some disks +FIX - OSx86 10.8 (Mountain Lion) - InsanelyMac Forum

I don't know why, but apparently you can have this issue even if you never had using Chameleon as
happened to me...

>> How I can use mouse in Clover's GUI?

For UEFI users, just move your mouse... :)

For Regular BIOS users, add UsbMouseDxe-XX.efi

>> How I can change the Theme?

Add the Theme folder to /EFI/BOOT/themes/ and replace the refit.conf file on /EFI/BOOT/
with the one provided with the Theme...

>> How I can change Clover's GUI resolution?

Clover automatically set the highest available resolution for Regular BIOS users...

If you want a lower resolution, add the entry below to your refit.conf file...

screen_resolution WHIDTHxHEIGHT

For UEFI users, unfortunately there's no way to set a higher resolution, we are stuck at
1024x768...

BTW, we don't need to reach Clover's GUI as we don't need his ability to load any other
EFI capable System, so, we just need to use Silent Boot and boot straight OS X, just
like a Real Mac, I reach my Desktop on about 20 seconds or less and I don't have any SSD... :)

To use Silent Boot, set Timeout to 0 on your refit.conf file...

>> How I can prevent Clover to boot Straight to Windows after boot the OS?

Follow Elclaudio's instructions here > http://www.osx86.net...html#post126871 Thanks Elclaudio !

Hi Kyndder, I've been 2 days testing Clover on my Vostro. Just to figure out how Clover works in comparison with Chameleon. I already use 2 USB flash drives FAT32. Both work after some tweaks in config.plist and placing my custom DSDT and SSDT (not using fixdsdtmask and OEMSSDT). Finally, I can boot into ML and Windows with no issues. Since it's triple boot setup (MBR layout), I just couldn't understand why I have constant reboot loop with Lion. It happens after a split second I press Enter. Retweak the config.plist but no avail.

It's not happening with Chameleon even I use the same DSDT and the bootloader itself. I see Clover automatically detects this laptop as MBP 8,1. That's good but it just can't boot Lion partition :confused:

Hi fau7i!

Please, make the steps below...

Enable boot log by editing your refit.conf file on the /EFI/BOOT/ folder like the example below...

#nolog

Reboot your machine, and if possible, run DarwinDumper.app to send us a full dump of your system > DarwinDumper - New Releases and Updates - InsanelyMac Forum

Sorry for the external link, I'll ask to blackosx if he could place a link for his awesome tool at this thread...

If you can't run the app, place here only the boot.log file that you can find at /EFI/misc/ folder...
